To promote the general archival awareness among the people and to facilitate a user friendly interaction with the scholarly community, the National Archives has thrown open its gates to the interested Public who are now taken around various wings of the Department - Stack Area, Reprography Section, Preservation Section etc., and familiarized with the need for and methods of preserving our heritage and Promoting archival awareness.

Another means of popularizing Archives is by organizing "Archives Week" which features exhibitions on different topical themes drawn from Modern India History. A rich amalgam of public records, private papers, rare and contemporary photographs and press clippings help in tapping the public interest in the holdings of the archives, especially among the youth and student community. Mobile exhibitions are also being organized in different parts of the country to enable the public to appreciate the archival wealth of the country. In addition to this, the Department also mounted exhibitions abroad viz Moscow, Surinam, New York and Singapore on topical themes.

In another significant development, on 6 July 1998, Shri K.R. Narayanan, Hon'ble President of India, declared open the Museum of the National Archives to the general public. This Museum, a pioneering endeavour to portray a representative overview of the multifarious holdings of the National Archives, is rich in its contents which by its value and display technique, promotes a common man's interest in archival holdings. The Museum is open to the general public on all working days of the National Archives of India.
